Boone showed up at the saloon during a lull in the action.

“Miss me already?” Hannah teased.

“I always miss you,” Boone reassured her. “You’re my second favorite girl in the world.”

“Lindsey better be the first.”

“Do you really doubt that?”

Hannah shook her head. “No. You’re a good father.”

“I am. She’s a good daughter, too ... when she’s not being a hormonal mess. I hate the teenage years. I can’t even tell you.”

“Well, she’ll get over it eventually,” Hannah promised. “I think I was a normal human being again by the time I was twenty or so.”

Boone scowled. “I was hoping for eighteen.”

“Yes, well, keep hoping.” Hannah clapped his shoulder. “Seriously, though, what are you doing here? You’ve only been gone for a few hours.”

“I’m looking for your other half.”

“Cooper?”

Boone nodded. “Notice I didn’t say he was your better half.”

“That’s because I’m the better half.”

“You know it.” Boone winked at her and then turned serious. “Is Cooper around?”

“He’s out somewhere with my father.” Hannah’s smile slipped. “They’ve been gone a long time. I’m a little worried.”

“Are you worried that your father hit Cooper over the head and dumped him off the mountain, or that Cooper locked your father in a closet with the intention of keeping him there until your father gives in and admits that Cooper is the best thing that ever happened to you?”

“Maybe a little of both.” Hannah was rueful. “My dad hasn’t exactly warmed up to Cooper like I hoped.”

“No?” Boone cocked his head, considering, and then held out his hands. “Honey, I think you’re asking for the impossible. Your father will eventually come to see that Cooper is a great guy. It’s obvious you guys have something special — and I guarantee your father sees that — but it’s difficult when dealing with your baby girl.”

“That sounds like rationalizing to me.”

“It’s the truth.” Boone was firm. “Your father loves you. He’s going to eventually love Cooper, too. Have a little faith.”

“It would be better for me if they fell in love with one another now. I have enough on my plate without having to worry about the two of them.”

“I get that. You can’t force the situation, though. It’s up to them to work things out.”

“Maybe that’s what they’re doing now.”

“Maybe,” Boone agreed. He had his doubts but there was no reason to give voice to them when Hannah was feeling fragile. She most definitely had enough to deal with. “I am here for a reason, though. Given what happened with Astra last night — and in the wake of Stormy’s death — I was thinking now might be a good time to check Astra’s store. I was hoping Cooper would go with me.”

“Oh.” Hannah was taken aback, although she shouldn’t have been, she realized. It made sense. “I’m not sure where he is. I know he’s in town.”

“Well, I’ll find him.” Boone turned to leave and then stilled, casting a fond glance over his shoulder as he regarded Hannah. “It’s going to be okay, sweetheart. Your father is a rational man.
